The 2009 Pangaea Immersion will take place Huancayo Peru
located seven hours east of the capital city of Lima. Positioned in the Peruvian
Highlands, Huancayo sits at an elevation of 3200 meters (10,000 ft) above
sea level. Huancayo is home to almost 250,000 Andean people who have come
from the surrounding rural areas looking for work.
In the early 1980’s, guerilla fighters from the terrorist group, Sendero
Luminoso ( The Shining Path) to gained economic and political power in the
Peruvian Central Highlands through violence. Today, Huancayo is a sprawling
market town, which is in close proximity to many rural communities giving
it a very “traditional” feel bustling with locals in traditional
dress. Positioned high in the Andes, Huancayo is visited by few tourists and
does not have the economic advantages of other areas. It offers a location
for study that takes advantage of rural and urban settings while giving the
visitor an authentic Andean cultural experience
Gulu,
Northern Uganda
The Acholi are a Luo people, who are said to have come to northern Uganda
from the area now known as Bahr el Ghazal in southern Sudan. Their traditional
dwelling-places were circular huts with a high peak, and they were skilled
hunters, using nets and spears, and kept goats, sheep and cattle. The Acholi
are known to the outside world mainly because of the insurgency of the Lord's
Resistance Army (LRA) led by Joseph Kony, an Acholi from Gulu. LRA's activities
have been concentrated within Acholiland, and populous Acholi remain internally
displaced persons., as relative peace has come to the region, the north has
experienced new interest from international investors from various sectors
including technology and agricultureWhile development is sure to take decades,
there is great potential for the north as a center of economic activity and
social redevelopment.
