In July 2009, 10 student volunteers and Pangaea program staff will embark for Peru and Uganda to explore and discover the various approaches youth in Peru and Uganda are taking to effect social change and what efforts are needed to make basic improvements to the lives of local people. Volunteers will have the opportunity to meet local leaders who are working to promote social change for youth and families and participate with their efforts.
In Peru and in Uganda, the program will focus intimately on indigenous culture in the Mantero Valley in the Central highlands of Peru, and indigenous culture in the Acholi-land, region of Northern Uganda. The program will also offer opportunities to connect with youth and community programs in more urban centers like Lima and Kampala. These activities will help student volunteers understand the challenges of urban and rural development programs.
This immersion offers a unique opportunity for students / volunteers to learn about development efforts and programs established by grassroots organizations, and national and international NGOs, but also the opportunity to volunteer with these organizations on service projects. Moreover, the program will showcase the incredible natural wonders: Andean Mountains and the Nile River, and how these natural wonders play into/are a part of ecological challenges and development in each country.
This unique program is perfect for candidates who want to learn about other
cultures, learn about development efforts, and adventure through the outdoors
